New Material, New Sound

This simple looking project has a specific purpose. Rolling on it’s tracks are billiard balls and steel balls, both 1″. The tracks were to be fun but have only one track. The point of this project was to detect the sounds of the balls when they drop. There’s a spot where the ball drops down a few inches onto the track below. This was built for a company that sold a device that detects a change in sound for assembly lines. Sound in line with what’s normal? Good. Detects an “abnormal” sound… bad. The two different materials, (miniature) billiard ball and metal ball, give off different sounds when they drop – showing off the company’s product at a trade-show setting. They mounted to device once they received the RBS – not shown here.

I was asked to make two of these. This is the first one, and later on, because of its good results and cool look was asked to make a duplicate.

100% stainless steel, TIG welded.
